Primary Research Exercice

Image
In today's class, we had an exercise about primary research. We walked around campus and then walked in the Vijay Patel building while taking photos of anything that related to our project and theme. We also had some time to sit down and create some quick sketches or development sketches.  Here are some of the pictures I took:  I mostly photographed places and spaces where I could look for similarities or get inspiration for my project which is oceanic-themed. I was planning to include a lot of organic form elements on my building so there are also some pictures with curved structures. In some of the images, there are also places on campus where there were some metal striped structures and then some more images of the Vijay Patel's interior.  In these photos, there are the curved and metal structures of the buildings In these images, I photographed these interlocked staircases with geometric structures in the Vijay Patel building.  Then we sat at the sitting area in front of th

Further Research - Ma Yansong

Image
Ma Yansong is a Chinese architect and founder of the MAD architect firm and he is an inspiration to the world of architecture by creating his avant-garde, futuristic and innovative designs. He is known for how his designs reflect his “Shanshui City” concept that balances the natural environment, urban landscape, and society which is shown through his architecture. In addition, his designs blend Chinese culture with modern architecture and h is work challenges "traditional notions" and opens up new possibilities for the future. His view of architecture is not only providing shelter for people but also as an art form that inspires and transforms people's lives. He wants to create spaces that are also emotionally resonant as well as functional. By balancing nature and the built environment, he is able to create structures with organic forms like mountains, oceans, and clouds and include organic materials in his designs. However, technology is also a big part of his designs,

Developing sketches part 2 - Project Development

Image
Through the development process, I decided to choose the wave-building concept for my project. So this is how I developed the design furthermore.  In some of these images, I'm trying to change the structure to make it curvier as a wave. In this image I pulled the glass part of the building inwards, to create a narrow scape/canopy on the wave exterior of the building. In these next 2 images, I tried to change some details like adding a terrace at the top level and making the top end more pointy instead of squared edges to see what it would look like.  This was part 2 of developing my sketches where I tried to focus more on the wave part of the building. After already having completed this I noticed some similarities in the design with another student's older design so in the part there will be the process of trying to change the structure based on some research.

Developing sketches part 1- Project Development

Image
After having my sign-off and talked about the ideas I had, I decided to try and develop some of them and see which one stood out more. For that, I tried out redoing some more sketches and then tried out the shapes/forms for each building on sketch up just to try and see how the structures could work on the program.  This is a plan sketch from my tutor that we discussed during the sign-off tutorial. These are some ideas for adding to each building a more clear visual with some additional details like the wave texture on the sphere, the curve of the wave building, and the shape of the trident building. I had these clearer ideas but I had to think over how each one could work out in 2d but also 3d between the time frame we had for our project this term.   Here are some more sketches, these are focused on the wave building. I was thinking of how I could add to it by sketching a few different versions like adding a terrace at the top level under the wave structure or bring the wave shape a

Project Sign-Off

Image
This is my sign-off  tutorial where I discussed with my tutor about my initial ideas for this term's project with the oceanic theme. I had 2-3 solid ideas out of the 5 and we talked about how they could be developed so I would be able to choose the best one. We also talked about possible location options like cities in Cyprus and also about where I should focus my research on. I will be doing 4 2D pieces and 2 3D pieces instead of 3-3 and after this, I will follow up with a develop ideas post where I will be showing my tryouts, choose my final idea, and also post a new smart objective after that.

Smart Objective

My architecture project for this term's art portfolio module will be oceanic-themed and the concept is a wave-shaped workplace building. It will be 3-4 levels with a minimalist design, there will also be a terrace on the top level under the wave structure. The wave part of the exterior will start from the ground up diagonally and full glass walls will close the rest of the open space, creating a half-diagonal square. The exact location is still undecided but it will be near the ocean so the glass walls will provide amazing views as well as a lot of natural lighting. I will be creating 3 3D pieces and 3 2D pieces, the 3d pieces will be the exterior of the building and the 2d pieces will be sketches of the interior and floor plans. I will be scanning the sketches and photographing the final 3d pieces to use for my portfolio.

Tell me a story - Development Exercice

Image
Once upon a time, there was a haunted island, only a few people lived there and amongst those locals, there was an architect who wanted to create something new and a never seen before structure for his people. Often he would see the spirits hidden deep in the jungle and when they would visit his and the people's houses but when big waves were near they would get scared and disappear. He watched the big waves hit the shore and he got inspired by the effect the waves had on the spirits so he decided to design a wave-shaped building that would help their land to be free of those spirits. He wanted it to be like a real huge wave, frozen in time that would also invite people to visit their island from all over the world just to see it. For that reason, the building would be like their own special view sight and scare the spirits away, as well as a workspace for the locals and anyone else who would decide to move and work there.    " The great wave of Kanagawa " by Hokusai

The Fantastic Five - Idea Generation

Image
This post will be about showing and talking about my first ideas. Now that we know the themes for our projects I will try to sketch and talk about a few of the ideas I had for my project with the "oceanic" theme. 1. First will be the more solid idea I have, I thought about a workplace building with a wave shape which will take most of the left side of the building and glass walls throughout the rest of it.  2. The second one would be a sea shell-inspired small house with a circular/swirl shape that extends to the side and the exterior may be rock textured walls or stone/rock pieces walls. 3. The third idea is a glass sphere building held up by columns on shallow water. This would be either an apartment or a gallery/ public place to visit for views.  4. The fourth idea I had would be a trident-inspired shaped building, with three units which will be three separate spaces on the building that will represent each spike. The exterior would be rock textured resembling ocean rocks/

Initial Research : The Wave by Lacime archietcts

Lacime Architects is an architecture firm founded by Zhaoqing Song in 2001 and it is based in Shanghai. Their philosophy is "simplify complicated material" and their work is known for high-class designs. Now after 13 years, their team includes over 300 architects and they build their experience over time by creating and being part of large projects overseas and in China. Their projects mostly consist of residential, commercial, cultural, and other types of works, some being the "Suzhou Financial Center Exhibition Hall"  (2019 Suzhou, Jiangsu, China), the "Vanke Beijing Upward" buildings (Xihuayuan district, Zhangjiakou, Hebei, China), the "Jianye Lanhai Zheng Tendancy Demo Plot" (2020 Zhengzhou, Henan, China) and many more.  A specific work of theirs that was inspired by the space where the "water and ground meet", is really interesting and connects with this term's project is the "The Wave" art gallery building. It was b

First thoughts on themes

Today we have discussed our theme options for this term which were "Spiders from Mars", "Renaissance" and "Oceanic". Since our project for art portfolio 2 is gonna be 3D based, these themes were chosen to help us focus more on that.  In general, all three themes were interesting to me and throughout the presentation, I had a few ideas already but was a bit skeptical about how they would work for a 3D project which worried me a little. At first, I was leaning towards Renaissance which was a theme that I really liked because historic buildings with gothic architecture was one of my favorites, but after thinking a bit through the end of the theme presentation I also had an interest in the oceanic theme that gives me a little more creative freedom with shapes and colours and inspired me already with a more solid idea.  After thinking about it some more I think my first choice would be the oceanic theme, but I will still think about it and have a final choice

Welcome back to my blog

Image
Welcome back to my blog for Art Portfolio 2. This is the last term of our foundation year in art & design which brings closer my undergraduate year at DMU. After two terms I've gained a lot of knowledge that it's going to be especially useful for this term, Art Portfolio 2 project which will be in 3D.  This term I am hoping to complete another project that is more well-made and of good quality to reach professional levels. Last term I believe I had a good result but for this term I am also looking forward to contracting a better plan by doing more research on needed information, like looking into more materials and doing more in-depth research on artists and buildings that are gonna be related to my project to show and have a better understanding of my progression route and have a clear version of what I'll want to do in terms of developing my idea.  As this term's project will be in 3D, I believe I will need to practice my skills in sketching, and art/craft making
