Initial Research : The Wave by Lacime archietcts

Lacime Architects is an architecture firm founded by Zhaoqing Song in 2001 and it is based in Shanghai. Their philosophy is "simplify complicated material" and their work is known for high-class designs. Now after 13 years, their team includes over 300 architects and they build their experience over time by creating and being part of large projects overseas and in China. Their projects mostly consist of residential, commercial, cultural, and other types of works, some being the "Suzhou Financial Center Exhibition Hall"  (2019 Suzhou, Jiangsu, China), the "Vanke Beijing Upward" buildings (Xihuayuan district, Zhangjiakou, Hebei, China), the "Jianye Lanhai Zheng Tendancy Demo Plot" (2020 Zhengzhou, Henan, China) and many more.

A specific work of theirs that was inspired by the space where the "water and ground meet", is really interesting and connects with this term's project is the "The Wave" art gallery building. It was built in 2020 and it is located on the coast of Tianjin, China. It is made from 13 thousand aluminum tiles that resemble waves. They designed the "wave" as a cultural hub within the Binhai New Area and is a 3563 square meter structure. BIM Technology was used to create this, the form of the 2-level, y-shaped building resembles a wave breaking on the shore and the aluminum tiles reflect the water from the sea which makes the visual even more real. The aluminum scales were a good material to use since they were light in weight but still provided enough strength to the structure. They are also recyclable because this material has a "high scrap value" and they don't get easily rusted which provided a longer-lasting result.

While designing it the architects made sure to remember that they were working with aluminum which was a material that can withstand water-induced corrosion. The structure is made out of a sophisticated "web of steel trusses" that surrounds the center which is made out of concrete and this resulted in not needing to use columns.

The exterior extended up to 8 meters in height and the curtain walls they created, helps the visitors to a stunning view that links with the outside nature. The spiral exterior also provides insulation and a lot of natural light in the building. The building's top design as well as it's overall structure/ integrated design helps conceal all the "electromagnetic devices" beneath the building, turning the space into a "pure form" place with the help of technology.

This building is a really helpful project to study as it is connected to what I will be going for in creating this term's project. Researching the structure and materials gave me some helpful visuals on some of the initial ideas I had, also this knowledge helped me understand better how I can apply useful information for the materials and design that I will be using.
