Further Research - Ma Yansong

Ma Yansong is a Chinese architect and founder of the MAD architect firm and he is an inspiration to the world of architecture by creating his avant-garde, futuristic and innovative designs. He is known for how his designs reflect his “Shanshui City” concept that balances the natural environment, urban landscape, and society which is shown through his architecture. In addition, his designs blend Chinese culture with modern architecture and his work challenges "traditional notions" and opens up new possibilities for the future. His view of architecture is not only providing shelter for people but also as an art form that inspires and transforms people's lives. He wants to create spaces that are also emotionally resonant as well as functional.

By balancing nature and the built environment, he is able to create structures with organic forms like mountains, oceans, and clouds and include organic materials in his designs. However, technology is also a big part of his designs, as it helps to move things easier and faster and also pushes boundaries to help explore new ideas. An example of that is when he used 3D printing to create complex forms that wouldn't be so easy to accomplish with traditional construction techniques.

One project of his that stood out which also connects to this term's project theme "oceanic" is the "Absolute Towers" building in Mississauga, Canada. These twin residential towers are characterized by their wavy curves that resemble waves dancing in motion. This design won many awards such as the "Best Tall Building Americas Award" and more.

He also worked with well-known architects such as Zaha Hadid and Peter Eisenman. Some other great works of his are the 'Harbin Opera House"(China), the "Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort"(China), and many more. Some more of the awards he's won are "Designer Of The Year" (2013), "D21 Young Chinese Architect Award" (2013), "Architecture League Young Architects Award" and plenty others.
