Week 4 Further Research - Büro Ole Scheeren

Image
Büro Ole Scheeren is a German architect, urbanist, and principal of the "Büro Ole Scheeren group", their offices being in Beijing, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Bangkok. He is known for creating one of the largest buildings in the world which he also partnered with Rem Koolhaas for. His futuristic vision is shown through his work with his designs being "complex" and advanced with technological systems. He also worked for multiple architectural forms in Germany.  In addition, he has designed apartment towers, called "The interlace" which were completed in 2013. The blocks are vertically placed on top and next to each other with different line layers and interlocking, there are 31 blocks and each one is six floors. His other creative works like the "Maha Nahkon" Skyscraper, the "Shenzhen wave" workplace building, and other projects show his ability to develop futuristic designs while meeting all necessities of the work and living requirements.

Galaxy Soho - Research

Image
Galaxy Soho is an office and commercial building designed by architects Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher. It was built in 2009-12 and it is located in Beijing, China. This building is made out of 4 "dome" structure parts and they are connected by ongoing bridges and curved platforms that create a "central canyon", designed like this to create a sense of "immersion and envelopment" with flowing dynamic movement structures. It is 67 meters and 332857 m²  and covers 46,965 m² of land,  each block is 15 floors, 12 being office floors and 3 retail floors with cafes, restaurants, and entertainment. It was inspired by Chinese architecture, specifically "Classical Chinese courtyards".  "Fiberglass-reinforced plastic", "glass-reinforced concrete" and "shipbuilding steel plates" materials were used to create a clean curve-looking exterior with an organic form structure. Aluminum and stone were also used for the exterior &quo

"Who am I?" - Exercise

Image
This week we did an exercise called "why am I?" which helped with practicing research. We had to draw a human figure and then start adding parts of our life from an early age, teenage years, personality characteristics, people that left an impact, and life-changing situations.  The lower part of the image is memories from my early age like going to the cinema a lot, swimming, and participating in fun activities with old friends. Then on the upper half of the image are experiences that happened later on, like getting to find new hobbies/interests like playing piano and reading. Also at the same time experiencing struggles with mental health, family situations, and getting home-schooled for the last three years of school. At the very top of the image where the head is, I also wrote about a few characteristics and people that have had an impact on my life as well as a few poets who left an impression with some of their work. This helped us practice research by researching ourse

Week 3 Further Research - Wassily Kandinsky

Image
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist and he is considered one of western art's forefathers of abstraction. He took painting studies in his 30s after completing his studies for law and economics. He was fascinated by colours, colour symbolism, and psychology from a young age and he traveled to the "Vologda region north of Moscow" as a part of an "ethnographic" research group, where the artworks and buildings he found there with shimmering and bright colours on dark backgrounds made him feel like he was moving in a painting, which inspired him in his early work.  His abstract work developed over time through his intense thinking on his artistic experiences, "inner beauty", "fervor of spirit" and "spiritual desire inner necessity" were central aspects of his art.  His interest in abstraction started when one day he went home to find one of his paintings hanging upside down which he stared at for some time. He was al

Lecture notes - Yinka Shonibare

Image
Today's lecture was about Yinka Shonibare. Yinka Shonibare was a British/Nigerian artist that works 2D and 3D work with sculptures, photography, painting, installations, film, and also dances. He was born in London but a few years later moved to Nigeria, then he moved back to London when he was a teenager and attended Byam Shaw art school. He is paralyzed down one side due to a condition but that didn't hold him back from continuing to do what he was passionate about. His work reflects colonialism, race, and class and links to historical/social events. It also links to the theme of earthly delights and a little to expressionism since he uses emotion in his work. He included himself in images as the central figure where he also creates drama in his images that can look that came out of films and shows.  From series "Diary of a Victorian Dandy" 1998 In 2010 he created an art piece for the "Fourth Plinth" which he was invited to, in "London's Trafalg

Lecture notes - Grayson Perry

Image
Our second lecture was about Grayson Perry  Grayson Perry is a British artist, writer, and broadcaster and he is interested in painting and performance. He went to art school in the 1980s and is best known for his work with ceramics, classic shaped vases which are "biographical". His themes were about himself, family issues, his symbolic teddy bear, etc, he used his personal experience in his work to talk about his family like as mentioned his family issues, specifically a theme of abandonment based on his dad leaving when he was 4 years old.  He was nominated in 2003 and won the "Turner Prize" which he accepted as Claire his alter ego, he is a transvestite which means he dresses as a woman. He then started working with tapestries to talk about contemporary issues, focusing on modern life and situations.  He was inspired by "art-historical imagery", different "renaissance religious" works but mainly a series of paintings by William Hogarth calle

Initial Research

Image
Today I will be researching architect Frank Gehry for my project.  Frank Gehry is a Canadian-American architect who is known for his futuristic designs, modern shapes/structures, and unique "fabrications".  He also uses out-of-the-ordinary materials such as "corrugated metal lends", titanium cladding, metal "Blomitectural modular parts", etc. His use of corrugated metal gives his work an "unfinished" look. Gehry's architecture changed the "urban landscape" by using innovative ideas and materials.  His style was also described as "deconstructivist" which means going against traditional structures. His designs are influenced by Baroque Sculpture and hobbies like sailing which are reflected in some of his work with shapes like "sails, waves and sea creatures", flow, and curves of his structures and he was also inspired by visual art.  Some of his most famous works are the "Walt Disney concert hall" downtow

Smart Objective

Image
Smart Objective  This is about my project with the theme 'expressionism' with my progression route in architecture. The concept is a two-tower building connected by a futuristic exterior ceiling design. It will be a workspace and a commercial building, the tallest tower being the offices and the smaller one will be restaurants, cafeterias, and shops. It will have glass ceilings and full-size glass walls which will provide a full view of the exterior design and natural lighting. The space between the towers will be an outdoor sitting space for people to eat, talk, etc. As long as materials and sustainability go, there will be perimeter walls with thermal bricks and 2 layers of 8-millimeter extra thick double-glazing glass for the glass walls, both to provide extra thermal insulation and also save energy. The interior will be futuristic as well with smart high technology. I will develop the image for this idea by using sketch-up and photoshop for my boards. Here are some inspir

Class Development Exercise - Listen, Meditate, create

Image
Today we talked about how we can develop our ideas by using one of the three methods we learned, which were 1. Listen, Meditate and Create, 2. Mountain & Valley and 3. "Make a Flag". I chose the first one because music helps me relax and focus on what I am doing. I chose a playlist of mine and started thinking about my first ideas and how I could develop some of those. I sketched a few new ones but also chose one of my initial sketches to improve. These are the sketches  Since my theme is expressionism I tried to let my mind be a little more creative and came up with these. This first one is the flower building, the thought was that the extra flower twigs on the main tower would be residential parts of a work building. The second one was a utopian-inspired building that was supposed to be based on the remains of an old building. This is a residential building with one side being apartments and the other being a waterfall wall in an overgrown green land. The third one is a

Notes on Caravaggio

Image
Today we had a lecture where we learned about Michelangelo Merisi also known as Caravaggio.  He was a painter and his early works were still lives and portraits which he sell to survive. One of his works is called "Basket of fruit" 1599, where he captures a lot of detail making the painting look really realistic. His inspiration came from street life which his experience comes from.                                                                                    "Basket of fruit"   (1599)  He started painting religious and "social scenes" of people he lived or spend time with. His religious paintings were updated in modern Rome where his subjects were described as religious, spiritual and biblical stories. A technique he used called Chiarosucro (which means light and dark) created "intense drama" and helped make the main characters more focused in his work, like "The calling of St Matthew".

Initial sketch ideas

Image
These are some fast initial sketches I drew in class for our major project. Most of the sketches were inspired by different future movies, and 1-2 sketches were ideas that came from my practice sketch-up lessons where I was randomly creating a building or inspired visions by other artists like architect Norman Foster and his futuristic designs. Since these were quick first ideas they will be developed in upcoming posts and with a clearer vision of which idea I will be choosing.

First thoughts/ideas - Theme Major Project

Today we were introduced to 3 themes for our major project in our Art Portfolio module. The themes were Purple Haze, Earthly Delights, and Expressionism, personally while listening to the description for each theme, I was having ideas for all three but ended up being more drawn to the third one     E xpressionism.  The reason is that it gives a range of freedom to discover plenty of ideas for each subject in this case, architecture. This theme can be used to express avant-garde ideas on buildings etc. The first thought I had for this theme, was a futuristic avant-garde tall building with unusual structures for the exterior.  Artists that came to mind who work within this theme are Rem Koolhas, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gerhy and Norman Foster.

Recreating an artwork

Image
For the first task in the Art Portfolio module, we had to recreate an artwork. We first paired up with our classmates and then chose an art image from class. I paired up with my classmate Lucille and the picture we chose was this : This is a mask-themed oil on canvas painting by James Ensor created in 1883. This was one of his first works and was inspired by his family's souvenir shops. By creating these mask themes paintings he was able to express his "non-conformity and frustration".  The Scandalized Masks We first started by choosing props for our setup and costumes.  Lucille was gonna act as the lady in the picture and I as the man. For Lucille's costume, we chose the blond wig with the white scarf, the brown cape, another fabric as the skirt, the wooden stick, and the glasses which we customized. For mine, we selected a black jacket as the black coat in the picture, a hat, and a mask which was also customized. We also picked up a bottle for setup decoration. In
