Lecture notes - Grayson Perry
Our second lecture was about Grayson Perry
Grayson Perry is a British artist, writer, and broadcaster and he is interested in painting and performance. He went to art school in the 1980s and is best known for his work with ceramics, classic shaped vases which are "biographical". His themes were about himself, family issues, his symbolic teddy bear, etc, he used his personal experience in his work to talk about his family like as mentioned his family issues, specifically a theme of abandonment based on his dad leaving when he was 4 years old.
He was nominated in 2003 and won the "Turner Prize" which he accepted as Claire his alter ego, he is a transvestite which means he dresses as a woman. He then started working with tapestries to talk about contemporary issues, focusing on modern life and situations.
He was inspired by "art-historical imagery", different "renaissance religious" works but mainly a series of paintings by William Hogarth called "A Rake's Progress" which shows a story of a man losing his "inherited fortune" because of bad decisions.
His expressionism shows through his work like his series of paintings "The Annunciation of the Virgin Deal" 2012, "Explosion from Number 8 Eden Close" 2012 and "Lamentation" 2012 are very detailed and are images that have a lot going on in them which also shows his passion for his work.
He also did some television work, like the show "why men wear dresses" where he explains further about being transvetite. He was great ins school until his 14 years when he started expressing his feelings about his family situation.
