ARX Portugal - Further Research
ARX Portugal is an architecture firm that has been in the architecture industry for many years but getting well known in recent years. It was founded in 1991 by Nuno Mateus and Jose Mattues, and it is a Lisbon-based firm that has established a reputation for pushing their boundaries and creating innovative designs with their projects in Portugal and abroad. Their team consists of highly skilled architects and they have become a leader in modern architecture design with their work being part of exhibitions and publications around the world.
The two founders started the firm after completing their studies in architecture. They first began creating small projects such as houses and renovations but later on started including more variety in their designs and ideas.
Their designs are inspiring and sustainable that can meet people's desired visions while keeping them functional. They try to integrate traditional design methods with the latest technology to create unique structures while trying to keep a relationship between the built and natural environment. One of their techniques is using the aspect of light and space, because of the natural light's importance in a room changes a lot of the visual designs. They try to include sustainable techniques as well that leave minimal environmental impact, by using energy systems and eco-friendly materials.
One of their earliest and most known works is the House in Restelo which was built in 1997. This project resembles the connection to the outside environment. It is built on a hillside with most of its living spaces below the ground floor. The roof is a grassy slope which gives the illusion of it being hidden when looked from above. They also completed plenty of public buildings like the Lisbon Architecture Triennale Pavilion, built in 2010. This structure's purpose was to house exhibitions and the design reflects the firm's belief on how architecture should be sustainable, which they achieved by using wood as the primary building material in that design.
Their unique and innovative designs are inspiring to the industry and encourage new architects to try pushing their limits to create new structures.
