Duane Michals uses " uses visual narrative, symbolism and metaphysical imagery to interpret the human condition" his sequences give a film appearance feel and embodies impalpable factors like " dreams . imagination , death , time , myth and spirit ".
He has "staged photographs, he has written on photographs, he has drawn, painted and manipulated photographs, he has constructed elaborate fictional narratives" he did not limit himself to what was known already in the genre .
The caption of these sequential images was " Photographers rely on their eyes too much to tell them what to photograph. Our eyes don't know anymore than our noses or teeth or ears. It is all in the mind; it is all mind. We should stop looking and start thinking. Life is not out there to be photographed. We are life. We are it. "
