Further Research - Gilbartolome Architects - Project Development

GilBartolome Architects is a leading architecture firm based in Barcelona, Spain and was founded by Pablo Gil and Jaime Bartolome in 2006. It has made a significant contribution to the architecture industry and it is known for their exceptional designs. The two founders of the firm, Gill and Bartolome have been exchanging their interests about architecture since their university years, and then after working for several firms and gaining useful experience, they decided to open their own firm.

Their philosophy connects around a concept which they call "Building-Landscape". According to to the architects, "buildings and landscapes are unities and should be integrated to create harmonious and sustainable spaces". Their designs were inspired by this philosophy which focuses on creating buildings that are not only to enhance the environment but also respect the surrounding landscape.

GilBalatoome architects are known for their remarkable use of natural materials, bold geometry, and complex details. Their unique style is characterized by the creation of spaces that flow, and blur the line between outdoor and indoors areas.

Some of their most famous works are the "House on the Cliff", the"Concrete House", the "Lopez House" and the "stone house". These projects have received good criticism and praise from architecture experts by also highlighting their attention to detail and their flawless use of nature and design. Another design the they undertook was the "Villa Slow". The design's aim was to have a slow pace of living in tune with nature. They had found sustainable techniques like green roofs, rainwater harvesting, solar energy production, cross-ventilation, and more. They had focused on thermal comfort by using think insulation walls, natural insulation of green roofs, and a natural ventilation floor with tiles for more solar gain.

The project that stood out to me was the "House on the Cliff". What makes it stand out is the double concrete wavy roof covered with zinc, it is a 2-floor residence and is built on a cliff looking towards the Mediterranean Sea in Spain. The zinc-clad roof makes the interior look like a cave, this style was inspired by the Spanish architect Gaudi and it is described as a "Gaudiesque Contemporary Cave". Their goal with this project was to be able to build this on the cliff surrounded by the mountain and looking towards the ocean. By choosing zinc material to cover the exterior they achieved the aesthetic of blending nature with the "artificial" and also giving the visual that resembles the skin of a dragon when you see it from below and when seen from above it resembles ocean waves. Although the interior might be cavernous, there is a lot of natural light from the multiple open wall windows and glass balconies. They also used technology mixed with traditional techniques to create this structure, but the furniture was mostly designed digitally and but was created handmade with fiberglass and polyester resin.

Their expertise and innovation have earned them numerous awards like the "Best Young Architect Award" by the Madrid Architects' Association, shortlisted for the "Young Architect Of The Year Award" in the United Kingdom, and more. Their work was also exhibited in different countries such as the United States, Japan, and Italy.
