Homage/Appropriation class task
This week our first exercise was to do an homage or appropriation of an art piece which means either recreating an art piece differently or adding to/altering an existing piece of art. I decided to do a homage using a painting called "Deepened Impulse" created by Wassily Kandinsky in 1928, he painted his way of showing the beauty of circles.
"Deepened Impulse" by Wassily Kandinsky 1928
This is my end result. I decided to create squares and rectangles instead of circles but used overall the same colours. In the following pictures, I will show my process of creating this.
First, I sketched the drawing in my sketchbook.
Then I transferred the drawing onto a wooden plate which I would later install in the frame that is in the next picture.
After finishing the sketch I started painting the shapes with acrylics paint.
I used about the same colour choices as the original painting with a few differences. Then I also cut cardboard into rectangles for a few of the shapes to make the painting have a 3D effect. After painting those too I glued then on the plate.
Next, I started outlining the shapes with black so I could fill in the empty space as the background.
When I was done painting I hot glued the frame on the wooden plate, these are a few shots of the end result. I really like how the frame adds to the painting and the overall result looks nice, I think if the shapes were a bit better drawn it would improve the outcome.
