Software test: SketchUp

Today I am going to test SketchUp. I will be trying to create a simple house-shaped design to test how the website works and will be documenting the process.

After I signed in and clicked on "start modeling", the page opened to a board with point-view lines and one toolbar on each side.

Then I clicked on the little pencil icon tool that is in the left toolbar, and with that, I can draw lines for the design I want to do. So I started drawing the lines for the shape I wanted to create and used the point lines for guidance. I first drew a line on the red line and then connected it with the blue and closed it afterward to create a square shape.

Then I drew the sidelines to create the side walls by using the same tool and this time using the green line for guidance and turning the point of view by moving my mouse around to see the 3d view. Then I closed the rest of the lines and created a box.

Then I tried creating the roof by using the same tools, I did that by doing two triangles at the narrow sides and then connecting those together at the sides, I also used the eraser tools to erase any mistakes I did, you can find that on the left side toolbar as well. When I created the shape I wanted, I clicked on the right toolbar and then clicked on materials so I can choose something to dress the house with.

I chose a black and brown concrete material for the walls and a brick one for the roof. Then I tried to add windows and a door to complete the house by clicking on the 3d warehouse tool that can be found on the right side toolbar, but when I tried to choose and place them it wasn't working, I couldn't figure it out so I left the house with just the materials I've already chosen.

This is the final result. I didn't like the outcome but I believe it is because it was my first time working on this website which was a little confusing. I will keep practicing and working to create my final designs for my major project.

  1. Good start on sketchup with some good technical detail and opinion - well done
